Kid Rock’s Criticism

Kid Rock headlined Turning Point USA’s “All-American Halftime Show.” a counter-event to the Super Bowl Halftime Show. He spoke with Laura Ingraham about the NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny. While defending Bad Bunny, Kid Rock pointed fingers at NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Jay-Z. Jay-Z has been managing the Halftime Show since 2019. Kid Rock stated, “Which, nothing against Jay-Z. I respect him for his hustle and his music, but it seems like there’s a little bit of a DEI hire there going on.”

Allegations of DEI Hiring

Furthermore, Kid Rock suggested the hire was made to boost Black viewership. He claimed it was a response to Colin Kaepernick’s departure from the league. Kid Rock added, “Black guys love Jay-Z.” but also noted that he wasn’t ignorant and that “a lot of us love Jay-Z, not just Black guys.” He believed the NFL might have brought Jay-Z in specifically because of viewership concerns. Other performers at Kid Rock’s counter-event included Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett.

The Super Bowl Halftime Show Success

Despite criticism from some conservative figures, Bad Bunny’s performance was a major success for the NFL. Early reports indicated that over 135 million viewers tuned in. This made it the most-watched Super Bowl Halftime Show in history. President Donald Trump also criticized Bad Bunny’s performance.
