Eminem’s maternal grandmother, Betty, reportedly passed away this week at her home in Missouri. Sources close to the family shared that Eminem’s grandmother, Betty, died due to complications from breast cancer. The rapper was reportedly not with her at the time of her passing.

Grandmother, Betty’s Passing

The news comes from sources close to Eminem’s family, as reported by TMZ. Betty passed away at her Missouri home earlier this week. Reportedly, her death was due to complications related to breast cancer. Eminem has not publicly commented on his grandmother’s passing yet.

A Complex Relationship

Eminem and his grandmother Betty had a complex relationship over the years. In a 2000 interview with London’s Mirror newspaper, she shared her feelings about his explicit lyrics. She admitted that hearing his “vile disgusting lyrics” made it hard to believe he was the same Marshall she knew. Betty recalled him as the “same boy who used to come and sit on my lap.”

However, she also defended him, stating he wasn’t worse than other artists. She told the Mirror, “I don’t like some of the lyrics myself, but this is what the people want to hear.” Betty added that if her grandson was going to be criticized, then others should be criticized too. She specifically mentioned Limp Bizkit and Ozzy Osbourne as examples.

A Plea for Connection

Betty expressed her love for her first grandchild, stating, “He’s my first grandchild, I was there then he opened his eyes, I love that boy.” She shared a desire to end any conflict between them, saying, “I want to stop this war between us because life’s too short.” She wanted him to “hang in there, because everything’s going to be okay.”

This news of Betty’s death comes almost a year after Eminem himself became a grandparent. His daughter, Hailie Jade, welcomed a baby boy named Elliot Marshall McClintock last April. Elliot is currently his only grandchild. Eminem announced Hailie’s pregnancy in the music video for his song “Temporary” in October 2024
